Shanghai, the city of the worlds economy. Not only belongs Shanghai to the financial center of China, but it's port has the highest number of goods passing through. About 736 million tons of goods passing the port each year and is therefore the biggest port in the world. Shanghai generates one twelfth of the China's gross industrial output by taking up only 0.06% of the China's land area. In terms of heights the city's skyscrapers can easily compete with international cities. Shanghai has the 4th most skyscrapers in the world who's size are above 100 meter, right after Hong Kong, New York City and Tokyo.
To reach this size, it took about three decades Shanghai transformed into a modern, strong and international connected city. The roots go back to AD 960-1279 when the place turned from a village to a trade market. Since then Shanghai became more and more an important industrial center for the world. Between 1978 and 2000 Shanghai increased its GDP 6.5 times and reached 48.749 billion US$ with a annual growth rate of 9.5% in average. Some say if someone wants to see China, he shouldn't go to Shanghai. Many China towns outside of China are more Chinese than Shanghai itself.

Geography
上海 is the Chinese character for Shanghai, in pinyin: "Shànghǎi". It means "above the Sea". Literally, the average elevation is just four meter above sea level and located in the middle of China's east coast. Shanghai is very flat. No more then 103.4 meter above sea level is the highest point in Shanghai. The Yangtze river crosses the county whose tributary Hungpu river flows through the city of Shanghai. The former wetlands have been more and more disappearing while the agricultural and living areas came up. Due to its central location and its good accessibility to the world seas, Shanghai has the biggest and most important port in the world.

Shanghai weather is generally mild and moist, with four distinct seasons - a pleasant warm spring, a hot rainy summer, a comfortable cool autumn and an overcast cold winter. The region's location at the estuary of the Yangtze River to the East China Sea makes it so wet that it rains for about one third of the year.
The hottest time here comes in July and August, with more than 10 days at temperatures above 35 C (95 F). The coldest time is from the late January to early February. The spring from March to May is the most comfortable time.
